Wednesday 21st January

Wednesday 21st January

(Covering the last 24 hours)

Oh, what a night.

A full lightning storm came straight through us. You always know it’s coming — first the temperature drops, then the rain turns torrential, and finally the wind arrives with real intent. At its peak, the wind must have been around 35 knots, all while lightning cracked across the sky around us. The flashes lit up the ocean in stark, frozen moments — boat, waves, horizon — then back to black again. There’s nowhere to hide in a rowing boat; you just keep moving, heads down, trusting your systems and each other.

We are now absolutely soaked and exhausted. Everything feels damp — clothes, sleeping bags, gloves — that deep, salty wet that takes real effort to get rid of. It’s the kind of night that drains you not just physically but mentally too. Still, we kept the boat moving, checked in on each other, and waited for it to pass, just as we always do.

Today promises a bit of sunshine, which we’re very much hoping will help dry everything out. I’ve said that before… but hope springs eternal out here.

Back to the oars.
